How much does a website cost?: As a digital agency owner, I get this question all the time, but people expect the answer to be straight forward, but it is far from that. (Or in carinsurance.com case, $49.7 million… and that was just the domain name.)

To put it simply, websites can cost anywhere from £12 a month (Wix) up to £100,000 for a bespoke custom built website.

So before you approach an agency and ask for a price straight away, you need to run through the requirements process with them first.

Let’s say you run a small florist and you have approached us for a website. We cannot give you a straight forward answer as we have to understand what sort of features and requirements you want and need on your website. Do you want a map, contact form, e-commerce functionality, mobile-friendly, SEO optimised, blog, CMS, search bar, CTAs, Testimonials, How many pages, Live chat, subscriber opt-in, media, landing pages, case studies… the list really could go on all day.

While £12 a month for a small business sounds great to get your website up there, Wix doesn’t do your business any favours. Your website will load a lot slower than most other sites, and did you know 46% of people say waiting for pages to load is what they dislike most about browsing the web on mobile.

Also, let’s say your business outgrew Wix. With Wix, they host your website, and can’t go anywhere else. They keep all of your content, and cannot migrate away from that Wix site. What happens if your users request something on the website that Wix just can’t provide for you? You’re stuck. Here are six more reasons not to use Wix.

Whereas with a custom-built website (we use WordPress) you can scale all the way up to the top. There aren’t many big names using Wix, but on the other hand, WordPress has thousands: BBC America, Bloomberg Professional, Sony Music, Microsoft News, TechCrunch and even The Walt Disney Company.

Essentially what I am trying to say is, don’t cheap out on your website. For small businesses, our starting price is £650+ for a website that is all yours, but we can charge up to £10,000+. So it really depends on the features you want on your website.

I like to compare it to cars.

You can get a Ford as everyone else does, but you just won’t stand out from everyone else. But if you buy a Ferrari, everyone looks at you, and that gains all the attention. So if you do get a website built professionally, I guarantee people will compliment you on it if done right. But do your research on agencies before you run through the website process.
